Red Kite Airsports currently fly from RAF Deenethorpe, a ormer Royal Air Force (RAF) station located near the village of Deenethorpe in Northamptonshire, England. It played a significant role during World War II. Originally constructed as a satellite airfield for RAF Grafton Underwood, it became an independent airbase in 1943.

The airfield primarily served as a base for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Eighth Air Force, hosting the 401st Bombardment Group (Heavy) flying B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. The 401st was activated on March 1, 1943, and trained in the United States before being deployed to England as part of the Eighth Air Force. The group's primary aircraft was the B-17 Flying Fortress. The 401st Bombardment Group arrived at RAF Deenethorpe in late 1943. The airfield became its base for the remainder of the war.

The 401st participated in numerous strategic bombing missions over occupied Europe from 1943 to 1945. Their missions targeted key industrial and military sites to weaken the German war machine. The group flew its first combat mission on December 24, 1943. The group played a significant role in the Allied air campaign, conducting missions such as the bombing of Berlin, Leipzig, and other heavily defended targets. The group earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for its outstanding performance during a mission over Germany in February 1944.

After the war in Europe ended, the 401st participated in the transportation of Allied prisoners of war from Austria to France. The group returned to the United States and was inactivated on August 28, 1945, and RAF Deenethorpe was returned to RAF control and used for various purposes, including storage and disposal of surplus equipment. Eventually, it was closed in 1948 and the airfield infrastructure was dismantled.
